I had a powerful opportunity to be a part of a coaching experience with families in Israel. My co-leader, Ya’ara, and myself created an interactive discovery where over 50 parents attended, on how to more connect with their children and create a more powerful connection within their family unit. Ironically enough, I needed to be able to connect with the people of Israel before I could effectively serve them. With their primary language being Hebrew and our cultures being different I began searching of ways to connect with them. One of my thoughts led me down this route….
I began thinking, “Where did/does language come from?” I understand that fundamentally it Is our desire and need to communicate with one another. This lead me to question, “Communicate what?” Maybe it started with passing on stories, traditions and customs to new generations. There is also description language which relates to objects (nouns or tangible things) and the instruction language (the to do’s). Beyond this physically present realm (what I call communicating about tangibles and/or actions/stories occurring in the past, present or future) language is to communicate the intangibles…..our emotions, feelings, and thoughts (regardless of what those are related to). All of this language refers to intangibles, things that are happening in another realm existing outside of this physical (the one we can touch) world.
FLASHBACK……. During our Discovery event in Israel I was told quite a few times that what I was saying in English didn’t translate to Hebrew. And I don’t mean literally translate, more like they don’t have a Hebrew expression or way of saying something like I was saying in English. Now Hebrew has been around MUCH LONGER than English has, so I wondered what makes something in English not be able to translate to Hebrew. I only speak English (my interpretations and discoveries will come from this perspective) and I understand much of this I am putting out there could be my own naiveness however, I want to look at the deeper meaning and principle. I remember sitting there in the circle with everyone rapidly scanning the vast land of my mind to come up with a solution.
My thoughts led to, “creation through curiosity.” Out of the curiosity I have to expand our growth and connection as living beings I will create language. That is what I began telling myself. Language has not stopped evolving and we are limiting our future, our children, and future generations if we believe it has.
What is the point of communicating about something in the “other realm,” the thoughts or emotion/feeling? Where does that lead us and where does that get us as a species? Maybe it is to discover more about OURSELVES by communicating it to someone else. Maybe when you take it from the “other realm” (where the thoughts and emotions/feelings exist) and put it into this physical realm (speaking the words into existence beyond yourself) there is a shift in our consciousness. Maybe at the root of ALL “other realm” communication we are seeking to create a connection. Regardless if that connection is predicated by negative, spiteful, or condemning thoughts, feelings, or emotions a connection is nonetheless desired. You are seeking to connect someone else with your thoughts, feelings or emotions. In story telling you are seeking to connect the listener (or reader) with your words (the story). In the tangible sense you are seeking to connect the listener with the object you are describing or the action/behavior you want them to perform. I was mentally blindsided by a whole new expanse of thoughts and feelings.
Is language then just ALL about connection?
Connecting someone’s thoughts to an object (tangible) or connecting someone’s thoughts and feelings to instruction. The ability to connect others to ourself and to connect ourself to others. What power we have. What if we all thought about language this way…..connection. Wow!! All of a sudden I am connected with each and every individual around the globe, and possibly all the future individuals still to come, because of my capacity to communicate (which we all have).
What if, just what if all of our connections came from a heart of love? What would the outcome be among each other and between cultures and between vast expanses of distance? Could we bridge the gap of our differences? What about every single time we begin to communicate with another (wether through voice, energy, written, texted, videoed, or emailed) we open our mind to the awareness that we will be connecting with that individual and what type of individual do we want connected to us?
The next time you speak, write, text, email, or sign language I challenge you to first listen inside and answer the question, am I connecting with a heart of love? All communication is connection, how am I choosing to connect? I challenge you to rewrite your families and this planets language to one of love. Don’t just teach, also show your family/children the language of authentic love.
